Why do solar systems that are installed by a solar company cost so much?
Most completely installed solar system are sold in the home.  Most solar companies spend thousands of dollars for a sales person to go to your home to sell you a solar system.  This is very expensive and you are paying their commissions or salaries.  Most solar companies that provide solar systems installed have high profit margins and use slick marketing and financing techniques to get you to purchase an overpriced solar system.  You get the same percentage of federal and state tax credits whether you have your solar system installed or you install the system yourself, so if you have average mechanical abilities and a friend to help with some of the installation, save thousands and install your system yourself.

Can I just hire a solar contractor to just do the installation?
Yes, if you do not want to install your system yourself, you can hire a solar contractor to install it for you.  You can have them provide the engineering and permitting or do it yourself and save money.  You will save money because you will not be paying for the expensive marketing and high profits from a solar company.  Be careful contacting solar companies as they may try to sell you a much more expensive system.  Contact your power company and they should be able to provide you with a list of solar or electrical contractors, or just do a search for solar contractors in your state.  Here is a link to networks a free service that will provide a list of solar contractors in your area.  Click Here  Make sure get at least 3 quotes and that they are all licensed contractors

What to do First
Replace all your incandescent light bulbs in your home to LED bulbs, and then do all you can to make your home as energy efficient as possible.  The air conditioner is by far the biggest user of electrical power in most homes, so make sure it is running properly.  Apply for a Net Meter from your power company.  Purchase this system so you have the information we provide to help you apply for a building permit with the proper information and drawings, and get any engineering needed so there are no delays.  We only provide our instructions, information, and drawings, after purchase via email.

PV Solar Systems
We have complete net metering on grid solar systems available at low costs that are less than half the cost of most systems installed, plus they qualify for the federal and state tax credits.  Most solar companies charge over $20,000 for a typical net meter grid tie system of about 5,000 watts installed.  The federal tax credit is currently 30%.  Check with your state to see what tax credit may be available.  We include detailed instructions with help in getting your building permit.  Most cities require engineering of the roof and mounting system, a drawing of your site with specifications, and a drawing showing labeling of conduit and power panels.  We provide examples to help guide you.

What is Net Metering
A net power meter is required for a solar power system or photo voltaic PV system to earn credits from your power company.  You cannot use your old meter as it will charge you for power you generate as it cannot determine the power flow direction.  You must apply for a net meter from your power company.  It usually takes 25 to 45 days to get approval, and then they will only install the net meter after you pass the final permit inspection.  It takes 1 or 2 weeks to get the net meter installed by your power company after they get a notice of the final inspection.  Power companies no long pay you for power you generate so you want to size the system so your solar credits equal the power you use.  A 5,000 watt system is all that is needed for most homes.  If you have a swimming pool, spa, electric car, or other high power usage device you may need another 1,000 to 2,000 watts or more.

Types of PV Solar Systems
A solar system is either a net metering system or a battery backup system.  Battery backup systems provide backup power when the power goes out, but requires many expensive batteries that need replaced every few years.  The costs of batteries and the costs of replacing batteries will offset most of the energy savings generated, and much of the power generated during the day is wasted as more power than is needed is generated during the day.  A net meter system will not provide power when the power goes out.  Hybrid systems can be built, but are expensive.  For power outages a small 2,000 watt generator and a few gallons of gasoline is a good backup and costs only $300 to $1000 depending on the quality of the generator.  All PV solar systems installed to your house must be permitted including a small battery backup system.

Types of Net Metering PV Solar Systems
There are 3 types of PV net metering solar systems.  The lowest cost uses a standard string inverter.  It is about 10% to 25% less efficient than the other two types.  The solar panels are wired in usually 2 series strings.  The string voltage is high voltage DC up to 500 volts DC and is dangerous to install or work on in sunlight.  The other two types of systems have about the same higher efficiency.  The most expensive uses micro inverters from enphase.  A micro inverter is installed on every solar panel and produces 240 volts AC.  The 240 volts AC again is dangerous to install or work on in sunlight.  The third type is a string inverter from SolarEdge.  It uses power optimizers installed on every solar panel.  These optimizers will optimize the current and voltage from the solar panels to provide optimum efficiency, particularly with partial shading of solar panels or solar panels installed of different plains, such as east or west instead of south.  This system is the safest to install and work on as the optimizers produce only 1 volt DC until they are connected to the inverter and the inverter is operating.  Proper operation can easily be verified while installing by checking the safe low voltage DC and adding the voltages to see that the panels are operating.  This is very important for the self installer.  For these reasons, the SolarEdge system is the system we sell. 

Types of PV Solar Panels
There are 2 types of Solar Panels Poly-Crystalline and Mono-Crystalline.  The manufacturing processes are different but they are very similar.  The Poly-Crystalline generally cost a little less.  Our PV solar systems come with high quality Poly-Crystalline solar panels and have a 25 year warranty.

PV Solar Panel Mounting System
We provide instructions and an engineering example for mounting the solar panels with our low cost easy to install system that does not use expensive aluminum rail systems.  This mounting system costs much less so we can provide mounting at a lower cost.  The mounting system is not included with this system.  See our listings for our MID and END Clamps.

The SolarEdge power optimizer is a DC/DC converter which is connected by installers to each PV module or embedded by module manufacturers, replacing the traditional solar junction box. The SolarEdge power optimizers increase energy output from PV systems by constantly tracking the maximum power point (MPPT) of each module individually. Furthermore, the power optimizers monitor the performance of each module and communicate performance data to the SolarEdge monitoring portal for enhanced, cost-effective module-level maintenance.
